Why BAR has launched
After a decade of leading the movement to end animal experimentation, I’m proud to announce the launch of Beyond Animal Research (BAR) - a charity built to transform science in Aotearoa New Zealand, by working with the science community to end the harmful use of animals.
A mission that is in my very bones. Because animal experimentation is only just one part of the problem.
A lifelong mission made real
My name is Tara Jackson, and for the past decade, I’ve been devoted to ending the harmful use of animals in science across Aotearoa.
This work hasn’t just been my job, it has been, and continues to be, my purpose.
With a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and nearly 20 years of experience in animal advocacy, I’ve spent the last 10 years deeply immersed in the complex world of animal use for science in NZ. I’ve built strong, trusted relationships with scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders, and I’ve come to understand the intricate system from the inside - how it works, and more importantly, how it can change.
Until recently, I served as Executive Director of a different charity dedicated to ending animal experimentation, where I poured my heart and energy into this mission. After 10 years of being at the helm, I left, as I needed a change of direction to pursue my own mission for animals.
And so, I have reflected on everything I had learned to date through university and my career - every insight, every relationship, every hard-won lesson and have channelled it into something new.
Something bold. Something built to go far for animals. I’m incredibly proud to introduce Beyond Animal Research (BAR for short!) – a new charity with a clear mission: To revolutionise science in Aotearoa and beyond by eliminating the harmful use of animals.
As “harmful use” goes beyond just focusing on animal experimentation and animal testing. BAR focuses on addressing the whole issue, not just one part.
Why BAR was created
Because I’ve seen, first-hand, just how deeply embedded harmful animal use is in our systems.
There are institutional, regulatory, financial, logistical, and cultural barriers that have been there for decades and they are slowing down progress - progress for animals, science and for society.
And while there have been some wins for animals, it’s not enough. I now understand that Science versus Animals blocks progress. We need a fundamental shift to deliver for animals.
That’s why I have teamed up with one of the most effective advocates for animals I know (and one of my favourite people), Elaine McNee to create BAR - a new way of working. A revolutionary charity to deliver change for animals harmed in science.
A new way forward
We’re not here to shout from the sidelines.
We’re here to sit at the table - to collaborate, to listen, and to work alongside the very progressive scientists who can make this shift real for animals.
The Science alliance for animals
BAR is The Science Alliance for Animals - working with progress, not against it.
Our strategy is simple but powerful:
Identify and remove the systemic barriers holding science back from leaving harmful animal use behind.
Because when we do that, we don’t just help animals.
We unlock better outcomes for human health, scientific advancement, and the planet.
What we stand for:

No one wants to harm animals in the name of science.
Over the years, I’ve met countless researchers, technicians, and scientists who want a different future for their science - one that’s innovative, kind, and effective.
I believe, truly and deeply, that we can create that future. Together. Scientists and animal advocates, side by side.

Though BAR is new, we’re not starting from scratch.
We’re building on years of experience, relationships, and trust - using that foundation to create something groundbreaking, effective, and deeply needed.
